I used the english language in India. Within the country, not everybody can speak english and furthermore there are a lot of different languages so it was difficult in some situations but finally you always can understand each other. At the university, it was quite difficult at the beginning because of the Indian accent. But, with the time, you become use to it.

Nearly every Indian speaks a few words English (English is official language next to Hindu). Most speak Hindu. You do not need to speak any Hindu, as lectures are in English. The Indians English might be a bit strange in the beginning, but you will rapidely accustom to the local slang.

the indian pronounciation in English is quite strong so that it takes a few days to understand all the words because some of them are pronounced completely differtent than in AE or BE. But after one or two weeks it was quite OK and it was possible to understand nearly everything.

the language of Karnataka is Kannada, spoken by just inhabitants of the State. Most people speak English and Hindi. Students are proficientin English and their native language is generally either Hindi or Bengali or Tamil or Kannada, but all speak Hindi on campus. English is the language on campus, except for joles and cultural aspects in which it is useless.
