Travel as much as you can. Mexico is such a beautiful country, and there are so many things to see. If you have a chance also try and spend a weekend somewhere far away from tourism with a family, with locals.
As a female be prepared that you will be treated differently than you may be used to and that you will have to adapt to the local culture (eg fashion). Mexicans are definetly machos.

Maybe more about the culture, but itis hard to learn the little things..But in general mexicans are enjoyable and respect that you are from a different culture and therefore don't understand everything..They also try to moderate a little their language (skip slang) for you to understand

Be careful. Mexico City is a big city, and one has to take care..For example, one should not get a taxi on the street (for robberies), rather call a taxi. Also be careful where you withdraw money. The university was very helpful informing us about what to do regarding security. We did never have any bad experiences, but we tried at least to be careful..And I felt safe there!

Cuando entré a la maestría me advirtieron que trabajar con el doctor Alfonso sería complicado, que no lo eligiera de asesor. Al final terminó siendo co-aesor de mi investigación; estoy satisfecho de trabajar con él porque de verdad he aprendido como se hace una investigación de manera rigurosa.
Creo que es un hombre muy crítico, pero no sabe medir sus palabras y puede herir a la gente, pero bueno, la gente no aguanta las verdades.

Cambiar los incentivos de la escuela hacia los amestros, porque los insentivos actuales hacen que los profesores preocupen por sus plazas y no por enseñar-

Mexicans don't dress that fancy as it is written in most books (jeans are ok). To travel around by bus is pretty cheap and has a very good standard.
Mexico City is not really nice and there is not so much to see, but the country itself is really amazing- try to travel and see as much as you can. Teachers of exchange students usually understand it if you are not there because you travel to another part to see Mexico.

Final comments
Mexiko has a worse reputation than it deserves. Of course its more dangerous than other countries but as always when you watch out and when you are not stupid nothing will happen to you.
