Housing
Type of housing: With a family
Arranged by: Host university
If returning, I would choose: Apartment/House
Why?
I started to live with a family. They were very nice (which is not the case of all host families) but I did not feel free to invit friends or listen to the music. Then I moved to campus. The room was great and people living on campus were nice. However the campus was a bit far from the city center. So if I was to go back I would choose a room/flat in town on my own or with flatmates.

The good point was that it is always easy to move if you want to change accomodation.
Host family: Not homogenuous, some families are very nice and very helpful (especially when you just arrived and are on your own). Nevertheless you can have some bad surprises sometimes.
On campus: Depending on the college you are in some rooms are better than other (size, noise, sharing the kitchen and toilets, etc). If you are moving on campus during the year, you can ask for a visit of all the rooms available.
In a flat: As a student it is almost impossible to live on your own ... but easy to share a house. The 2nd year students all live in houses in town. Thus there is a constant demand for new flatmates.

The school is located about 10-15 minutes from town, so it's convenient to be on-campus.

Housing is fine. Nothing special, no major complaints. I got a tiny room with its own sink and shared a large kitchen and bathroom with the other girls on my hall. Definitely get to know your neighbors! Some of my favourite memories of Lancaster involve hanging out w/ my neighbors. BTW, there was a payphone in a stairwell that I think could also receive incoming calls, but that's it. I lived in Grizedale.

The advantages of living on an anglo-saxon university campus are pretty straightforward: proximity learning facilities and availablity of supermarkets, banks or post office on site.

My personnal comments will not be of major relavance as the housing facilities have changed a lot, staring form when I graduated. Indeed, some important works, expansion and changes were made to the accomadation on campus last year.

I have already tried accomodations on campus and in a host familly. Sharing a house with friends can gather advantages of both kinds of housing: you are as independent as living on campus, and it is as freindly as living with a host familly.

At the beggining of the year almost all Erasmus students were with host families. I was very lucky as mine was wonderful but it is not always the case. I moved to campus on January (not because I had trouble with my host familly but i just wanted to try life on campus). Depending on your neighbours living on campus can be a real dream as well as a terrible nightmare. Experiences about housing are mainly led by chance. If you do not like your accomodations you have to be aware that in the major part of the case there is always a way to move and find something else.

Erasmus students are placed with host families which means that they have to show responsibility when in the house. That's why their independence is very much constraint. If one is not happy with the host family he/she has the possibility to move into an appartment on campus after one month.

Everything is o.k except the chair in study/bedroom is not good to use to study or work. And the price is to be honest, quite expensive
