Not all teachers are prepared to work with internationals. Just a few are pleased about the fact that there are some internationals, others are the opposite of pleased about that fact...;-)

Its easy to pick and choose, but my department was not comparable to the academic standards of my home university. However, I suspected that before going and was not hugely disappointed--the social capital you will get is worth it. My biggest pet peeve was the library--very difficult to borrow books, you have to stand in line for a long time (hours, sometimes) to check something out, and you cannot even take it home.

Most classes did not evaluate students until the final exams.

High level of study. Easy to speak with the teachers.

It depends what you are studying. I were at the faculty of foreign languages, and had personally a very good experience.

The only thing that I did suggest, since I was also the Candian Group Leader, was more of an introduction to Moscow State University before the students arrive.

Because I just studied Russian language, I can not communicate with the teachers and classmates well at the first time. But the teachers are really patient and kind. We 6 people in one class to learn the language. I like it.

Three hours a day is really less for learning a language, as to my part.
