Most things are dirt-cheap. I found that a cell phone is cheaper than installing a stationary phone, so I did not have one. Transportation is very cheap, however, if you travel outside of Moscow, a hotel can be pricey. I stayed with friends, so I don't know how much people paid.

Russia gets a bad rep for everything that has to do with ATM machines, banking, etc. I had no problems whatsoever. In the dorms there are tons of announcements posted by people who are selling anything from computers to furniture, giving tutoring lessons, offering to write a paper for you, etc. My department had an internet classroom as well, and there are internet cafes all over Moscow.
