“Université à éviter pour les Étrangers”
Anonyme 2
France, Undergraduate
, 2027
Overall

“Groningen.. one of the best memories and still going on.”

Overall
The University of Groningen (RUG) accepted me in August of 2015. Still then, the journey through the learning procedure is of great quality with professors who are dedicated to their field. I study Social and behavioral sciences and I am in the final year of my bachelor thesis. Especially in the third year, you are free to choose your own courses and build a track that is most suitable for your needs according to the career perspective that you plan to follow later on. The practical groups throughout each year help you to improve the communication, presentation, dialogue and interactive skills that every kind of job requires. I highly recommend it to choose it for your studies.

Pros
Excellent electronic platform for all the courses with all the necessary documents. The practical groups are many and very constructive, statistical tools like Spss and Jasp are included in the track and analysis of data.
Cons
An internship is not integrated into the university's track through which you could gain important experience, professionally but also to easier decide in which field you would like to be occupied later on.

Course recommendations
I was in the Netherlands to improve my Dutch so I was allowed to take any courses I liked. The Japanese history course was very good, as were the Japanese language lessons in the evening.

Personal comments
I didn't need any specific grades to 'pass' the courses and so I couldn't participate in the homework. A lot of work, including essays, was done on a group basis rather than individually. Some of the international students found it hard to get used to this.

Groningen is a real student city, you will enjoy a lot there. It is plenty of international students, specially Spanish (everywhere) and Chinese, but also German, Italian, Turkish, English, Japanese, French, Sweedish, African, North-American, Polish... all around the world, a great city to discover so many cultures

Disccounting caard to travel by train (you can get it in the station). Buy a Dutch Mobile caard (more useful). Cold very very cold in the winter (gloves, coats, scarfs, hats). Bikes (always second hand not more than 10 euros in the street) and buy a good lock, otherwise they will steal your bike...
