English spoken inside the class was fine. However dont count on hearing it apart from class. Everyone on the Island of HK speaks english pretty well. Be warned this can change in the New Territories and by the time you hot the boarder no one will be able to speak it.

It was a pity I could not get to learn more Cantonese, since all local students were always speaking this language when together. But I did have the chance to improve my English!

Not everybody speaks English as well as you might think, but there is always someone around to help you. Mandarin is of very little use.

Cantonese is fun to learn, but not really necessary as most young people speak sufficient level of English.
