because you want to make the most of your stay, so you spend more for travels because you want to check out the whole place, you spend more on nightlife (that's part of the Erasmus Stay! You meet a lot of people from different countries,...) About the housing, I don't pay a rent at home so I obviously spent more in Spain.

Living in Alcalá is much cheaper than living in Madrid and you can go to Madrid quite easily with public transports.

Personal spending habits
I spent more on food because I ate at restaurants often and more on housing because it included food and laundry service as well. With regards to nightlife and travel, I spent more because I travelled and went out more than I normally do at home.

Use the low budget airline websites www.rumbo.es and www.despegar.com for travel between Madrid and the larger cities along the coast like Valencia, Barcelona, Bilbao, and Malaga.

I believe my written skills, vocabulary, grammar and listening skills were all improved drastically by my stay in Spain, but due to the limited interest of local students in socialising with Erasmus students, I found that my conversational skills were improved only to a slight degree. This is why I heartily recommend finding a house/room to share with a local individual, preferably a student.

If you have the money and the time, it is well worth visiting Madrid for a night out, as it has a variety of clubs and bars. Alcalá has a surprising number of rock-orientated bars (no clubs), for example Paranoid or the Panadería, as well as more commercially-orientated places such as Gabanna or Can-Can. It is a surprisingly active place for such a small town, when it comes to night-life.

Many people actually went into Madrid if they wanted a proper night out. In Alcala, however, there were lots of small bars everywhere and one or two clubs. The "zone" was always busy on the week-end, and there was a club called Can-Can which held a special night on Thursdays for Erasmus students. The best cafe has got to be the "Renacimiento" cafe which had the best milkshakes.

They don't provide a lot of opportunities for students to do networking and companies don't come to campus to recruit despite that this university is good in Spain.
