If an erasmus stays with teh erasmus, than he will improve the english before the local language. I recommend to avoid after a first period of adaptation, to join all the local groups you can.

I took a three-week advanced spanish course wich greatly improved my spanish. I would only speak spanish to national and foreign students so I practised a lot.

I had spanish classes in the host university that were a big help in my Erasmus experience. It was also a place to meet other students and make friends

I speak the host country language because I'm from Mexico, the instruction language was english, I've already spoke it so it was not so hard

I picked up Spanish quite quickly but it is extremely important to interact socially with locals...that is the only way that you will learn
