I could only speak some phrases in portuguese before I went there, and most of them I had taken from lyrics of fados and brazilian music, but people from Lisbon are so patient and curious about foreign peole that I hardly could avoid to learn the language ;)

I studied interpreting and one of my languages was Portuguese, so it was essential for me to spend some months in Portugal. I arrived in Portugal after havong studied Portuguese for a year. I needed lots of practice to improve and the Erasmus was the best choice to do that.

Portuguese people are very open towards strangers and they listen to you and try to help you to learn the language. They are always very happy that someone wants to learn Portuguese.

I did not need the local language as local people (especially young ones) are quite fluent in English. Thus I experienced hardly any problems.

Overall, I never had any problems with the language, my Portuguese language skills improved a lot after my exchange period.
