I definitely made a lot of progress regarding my language skills, which was somehow a confirmation for myself that I went to the right country. However, I stayed in Catalunya in Spain, where locals most of the time speak catalan. If I had to go again to Spain for an exchange I would maybe choose another city/region. But in general Barcelona is one of the best places to be.

The faculty that I was in was almost out of the city (diagonal 690). It is an old faculty building with few facilities, but overall my opion of the faculties in Barcelona, while I have been to a few, are less equiped with computer materials

I speak spanish, and here there is a conflict between Catalan and Spanish. Some Catalans are a bit snobby about it and closed minded so they won't speak back to you in Spanish even though they know how to speak it. Many signs or magazines, theater productions, television channels etc are in Catalan. If you want to learn Spanish, go to Madrid, Salamanca or Granada...

Loved the Cafe Valenciana just in front of the Universitat - also the Bar Estudiantil...We also went to the local Subway on the Ramblas quite a bit when we felt like a taste of home. The Festival de la Merce in the fall is not to be missed. The whole city participates and comes alive - there are costumes, fireworks, parties, no one sleeps..it is amazing to see.

Barcelona is multinacional city meaning that I never had huge troubles in the beginning when I didnīt speak spanish because I managed with english. Anyway majority of the schools staff didnīt speak english, which was a problem especially if I wanted to ask something from the teahcher, but thatīs the best way to learn a new language when you have no other choice.
