I believe that a lot of foreign students, me included, who were not a part of an exchange program were offended by the fact that no free launguage course was offered by the university.
Moreover it would believe it to nice from the host university to give a tour on the faculty and explain basic things like how the print/copy system works, the librery etc..

A spanish test was given, & students were alocated into appropriate classes. Those which did not pass had the option of paying for private classes. However, these classes started quite late in the term, so I was limited to the amount I could learn during my time there.
I felt at ease in most situation, when shopping and eating/ drinking out.

Some courses were in Catalan but teachers are flexible, so talk to them about your language issues.

Spanish was spoken overall but sometimes they would speak in Catala out of habit. The teacher would translate immediately though so that we could also understand.
