In general, Ireland has a lower cost of living than California. I spent more on travel because there were many more opportunities there and I normally don't travel at home. Nightlife is less expensive than at home because it is not customary to tip on every drink in Ireland.

As far as food is concerned, I have to admit that it'g generally more expensive than in Italy, but if you pay attention to the offers, you can save a lot. Obviously, healthy food (i.e. fresh fruit)and other imported products are more expensive.

Accommodation on campus is quite expensive in Cork and the rooms are quite small. The appartments have a kind of clinical atmosphere. The appartments are usually well-equipped (kitchen - to share with three to five people -, dishes etc. What's missing is a washing machine and a dryer. The laundrette is very expensive.
Most important for me, if you search for a house on your own you can choose your housematesand you are more flexible concerning the arrangements with the landlord. On campus for exapmle there's no refund if you want to change accommodation in the middle of the term (you always have to pay in advance).

I was lucky to find some nice housemates and we rented a quite big perfectly equipped house, located in Sunday's Well and with a wonderful view to the River Lee. The distance to UCC was - in the eyes of our Irish fellows - quite big: 15 min walk to the Main Quadrangle.
