I wanted to see more of the States while I was there so I spent more on travel. I think I also went out more (evenings are much more hospitable in SB than in the be-puddled alleys of York!)

Travel, Nightlife:
was more expensive than at home.
Food, Housing, Overall:
was the same price as at home.
Telephone:
was less expensive than at home.
Accessibility of student needs
Second-hand household items
Personal comments
Buy utensils, pots and pans/ furniture from the thrift stores (either downtown or in Goleta). Live in Santa Ynez then you don't have to pay for utilities (if you live in private flats in Isla Vista the electricity and water bills can bve quite expensive)

Grocery shopping in USA is more expensive. I spent less in telephone since local calls are free. I spent more in accomodation as I live with my parents at home. Nightlife was less expensive because most of the clubs are free and also I went to many private parties. I spent more on travelling than I usually do because I took the chance to visit lot of places around.

I lived at home before going on exchange so had minimal expenses in that regard. Also, as I was saving for many years before going on exchange I was on a tight budget and did not spend much on travel, nightlife, etc.

the dorms are far more expensive than private or student owned apartments. I would recommend these options over dorms.
