I wish I had known...
Durham is TINY for people coming from big cities. i came from london and still havent gotten over the shock! no diversity (majority are white middle-class and privately educated, which isnt a problem, but when there is not much else it gets stifling and also is quite conservative). Nightlife is non-existent; i found it quite dull to be honest. newcastle is much more exciting, though it's not hard to be.

In my opinion:
Stay home.

Personal recommendation
Nice town/city, but you could do a day trip and see it all in an afternoon; to spend 3 years here is quite different. if you want something VERY different or you think you could get used to it, go ahead; if you want diversity, and a proper university experience, go somewhere better!

You can walk across durham in about an hour, it seems! a bike maybe for living out, but otherwise you can walk everywhere. train station's close for emergency getaways , i.e. when you will actually die if you're not exposed to something that even mildly resembles culture soon (not durham's strong point). it's an experience, like everything, i suppose...

Personal comments
the best way to learn a language is to go in the country. There is no better way.there are many international students and we are all in the same situation. It was really easy to establish contact with other international and local students. My language skills have definetly improved. I feel confident now.
