“Famous for Diversity, Student Body Seems Anything But Diverse”

I have a love-hate relationship with the University of Miami. The location, campus, professors, and quality of life are incredible. I love my field of study, and feel there have been lots of opportunities for advancement and achievement within my major's department. However, this school is lacking when it comes to advisors and administrators. Rather than having trained advisors, most are simply professors within the department, busy with their own commitments with little knowledge on courses and academic responsibilities. I have had to navigate many of my requited gen-eds and cognates (the wholistic education courses required by UM) on my own, and know many who have had to do the same. Further, many of the students here come from wealthy backgrounds and seem to make up the majority of the population. This school is very diverse, but many minority groups tend to stick together to avoid the privileged ignorance of many upper-class students.
