It takes a couple of days/weeks to organize a money transaction from your home country to your bank account. A credit card is necessary in many situations. And: If you do spent time on looking for cheap options regarding travelling, going out, you can save money. Internet is a powerful and very useful institution in Australia!

Food I spend the same, because the prices are quite the same. Telephone less because in the beginning I had nobody to call, at the end I spend much more. Travel is obvious that i spend more in a foreign country. I also travel around Australia.

For the mobile phone I recommend to take the operator "Virgin" or "Optus". "Telstra" is the most expensive one.

I spent less because at that time, the US dollar was very strong so my money doubled in value. However, if this had not been the case, I would have spent the same as in my home city.
