It is very difficult in the few several weeks as locals usually cannot speak a single word of English. It gets better after that, and it is a great environment to learn Mandarin.

Very good experience, living outside campus I had the opportunity to come in closer contact with local people. University system is very strict and teachers are very good.

It is nearly impossible to survive without Chinese. So the first thing is to be able to communicate with people. You have to talk with Chinese people in- and outside campus in order to master the language. Many people make the mistake, that they stay inside, are together with a lot of foreigners and only speak their own mother-languages.
