Personal comments
Many students arrived with no knowledge of french and were able to get up to speed quickly. I had taken french in highschool/university and so it was very easy to catch on. In either case expect to be lost for a while, but normally it wont affect your performance in class too much. Everyone is/was very helpfull

Dont miss the Medival Pub, near Cours Leopold, a laid back Irish place with good music, good beer, and a unique atmosphere.
Up for live music? Try The Barnum (near the train station) for Jazz-blues, Cafe des brasseurs for hard rock(near the market).
For Dancing - Cave de Roi, Circus, St Epvre

It is a very challenging university, and you will need to work hard, but I would do it again in a second if I could.

Nancy is a great place to study internationaly, tons of other international students, and not as overwhelming and stressfull as somethign like paris would be. I highly recomend it for the level of education, the central location for travelling, and the social life.

You'll have to work, that's the bottom line and the biggest drawback. But if you are prepared to work, you'll have a good time.
