UNITEC began as Carrington Technical Institute in 1976 in response
to the increasing demand in the Auckland area for vocational tertiary
education. Established on farm land west of Auckland city centre, it
focused on programmes in building and business. In the years that
followed, the institute grew rapidly and expanded the range of
courses offered. In 1985, the institute was renamed Carrington
Polytechnic and was recognised as a progressive multi-disciplinary
tertiary institute.
By 1993, six degrees were offered alongside an extensive range of
diplomas and certificates. The publication Vision for a Decade
confirmed a new strategic direction for the institute and a new name
was chosen to reflect its unique combination of university and polytechnic education. In February 1994,
Carrington Polytechnic became UNITEC Institute of Technology. Over recent years UNITEC has
strengthened its position of excellence in tertiary education.
